When I got this book some years ago for class, I had a love-dislike relationship with it (my dislike is likely due to a lot of caffeine coupled with "forced coloring" for assignments which require a lot of sedentary patience and focus--the practical opposite of what caffeine is good for). It's super effective for focusing on and memorizing details. The information is printed on one page, and you fill each category in the pictures on the opposite one with their respective colors--sort of like a vividly colored diagram meets paint by number. You still have freedom to choose the color as you fill in the words and pictures though.Tracing words and concept structures (take Mendelian Genetics for instance) was helpful and effective, and works great if you are a hands-on or visual learner. And since you are tracing words like "chromosomes" or "Australopithecus," you gain the benefit of reinforcing these words by writing or psudo-writing them out through coloring/shading.The pages were very lightweight and flimsy, so markers could bleed through easily and using harder, sharpened colored pencils could occasionally puncture through the pages if not careful. However, it kept the book lightweight and made for easier carrying. I know my professor was alright with us copying the pages and then coloring them since we were only using a portion of the book, so if you have this book for a class, and think you might not be using a lot of it, you might want to try asking about this option.

I had to buy this book for my class. At first I though it was strange to use a coloring book in a university course. However, I came to understand why. The graphics in this book are simple yet informative. You color part of the picture and then color in the words associated with that part. Each page comes wih an accompanying page of information that is made simple to read yet informative without using words that you don't understand. It is great for all kinds of learners because you are reading, coloring it in, and then seeing it. I never thought I would be able to grasp the complex concepts of human evolution but this book made it really easy for me to learn. Now I know how brains of humans changed over the years and much more!

There is a lot of really interesting information about human evolution in this book. My only complaint is that it's printed on newsprint paper, so if you use markers as I do, plan on placing a blank sheet of paper between the current page and the next picture because the ink will bleed through. It's better to use colored pencils but I don't have those so the markers are my only option. I read the essay for each new picture before I complete the one before it so that I can actually read the essay without trying to see through/around the ink!

.This coloring book is good even if you're not studying evolution particularly or taking a class that requires it. The pictures are quite detailed and take some time to color so it's really worth the effort and you'll get a lot of use from this book if you enjoy coloring or colored pencil work as a hobby. No the paper won't stand up to markers- but it's still a lot of fun.

Cool buy! I needed it for an anthropology course, but I actually am going to keep it afterwards to finish coloring it! Great info and visuals. I would definitely recommend buying this for your class or for fun to color while learning!

About the Author

Martin H. Krieger is Professor of Planning in the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He is author of Doing Physics (second edition, IUP, 2012), Urban Tomographies (2011), Constitutions of Matter (1996), and Doing Mathematics (2003), among other books.
