This is a fantastic book about design very well written; meaningful data that empowers you to understand and create in several fields of human knowledge. Besides it is so well researched that as a tree it opens in many other books you want to read from its bibliography.The only curious detail is the design of the cover... it doesn't change the high quality of the content but is so dull and fragmented in its composition that could make you mislead into think the book is a not very valuable manual.

I've been using this book as the basis for content in my UX design courses for over seven years. It is the best single resource available for the principles of design. It sets out design principles, based in the way the human brain and visual system work. Using these principles, you can judge not only if a design is good or bad, but also *why* it's good or bad.Befitting a book on design, the book itself is well designed. Each principle is summarized in a single page, and the face page shows examples of the principles in action, or being violated.Don't read it at a sitting. Read ten or twelve of them and give them some time to digest. But definitely get through all of them. You'll never think about design of the products and software you use the same way.

If you want to think like Einstein, DaVinci, Newton, Kepler, Gates and Jobs all rolled into one, this book is your cup of Eureka! It gets right to to heart of what makes design, any design: graphic, mechanical, architectural, technological, programming work for the customer/user. As you read over this wide range of examples of what makes great design, it begins to give the reader insights on how great designs work, how good designs become great and how it's time to drop those things that just aren't working. If we are in a business, any business, we must create and provide what users/customers want in a way that they want, a way that is clear, a way that is inviting. Nobody buys great ideas if they're to vague or shoved down their throat. A book of good examples to emulate and bad examples to avoid.

This book is good for beginners and perhaps it was because of my own negligence, but I was very disappointed by the depth of each topic. A single page filled with 20% content and you are done with the topic. It's basically a set of flashcards that teaches you just the terms and what they mean. Not how, why or what situations you need to keep a topic in mind for.If you're a professional looking for insight from another professional that goes into depth; Stay away. You won't be happy. If you are just learning about the fundamentals of design, then grab it and it will be a great piece of knowledge to keep beside you while you learn for the first few months. But, rest assured once you are beyond the very simple stages of design this book will collect dust on your shelf.Overall. Good book. Not bad and not great. But worth twenty bucks...

As a math-person rather than a design-person, I really just wanted something that could give me a Reader's Digest version of some design principles to give me the flavor of the field (the same reason why I love the series "101 Things I Learned in ... School").I have learned so much from this book! Not only does it give me insight into the question of why things around me look they way they do, but it has given me ideas of how to better design my lectures, slides, and hand-outs to improve information acquisition and retention for my students. Moreover, there were several topics with roots in mathematics that I might bring up in my Math for Liberal Arts course. It was also interesting to read about the design principles (or lack of adherence thereof) behind such epic failures as the Jeep Grand Cherokee "unintentional acceleration" debacle.My only "problem" with this book is how engaging and engrossing it is. You might think that because of the little bites of information it presents, it would be easy to read a topic or two in what snippets of time you have, but no, it's more like eating from a huge bag of M&Ms. Each morsel of idea seems to pass too quickly and you want another one. Before you know it, you've nibbled your way through the whole book and it's 4am on a day when you have to get up at 6am. Consider yourself warned!

This is one of my favorite books of the last few years.I buy around 1000 books a year, so that is saying a lot.There are so many parts of life to which this book applies.And so many new and different ideas for the design of anything -- museum exhibits, stores, factories, products, websites, and on and on.I cannot imagine anyone in a leadership position in any field who would not benefit from studying this great book.It is also incredibly well organized, easy on the eye and the brain.But stop on each of the 100+ ideas and think about it for at least a day; how it applies to whatever your own goals are.Remember that Apple's huge success is not based on science and hardcore technology so much as human factors and design -- the kinds of things you will learn in this book.

I'm a college student majoring in interactive media and I bought this book for independent study. My degree courses often deal with specific aspects or applications of design, but I wanted to gain a better understanding of general design principles. I am happy to report that this book is rich with design information that can be utilized by all species of designers!Each topic is given two pages - one page is more text-heavy and the other has visuals that demonstrate or exemplify the design principle at hand. Despite the seemingly brief dedication to each principle, the book is dense, efficient, and favors minimalism so although you may be able to scan over a principle in seconds, you need to take the time and study the information being presented in order to soak all of it in. Lidwell does a fantastic job at providing a survey of some of the most pertinent design principles. I foresee referencing this book throughout the rest of university studies and beyond.

About the Author
Douglas A. Van Belle is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. He was the first person to have served as the president of both the Foreign Policy Analysis and the International Communication research sections in the International Studies Association. He has also served as the Editor-in-Chief of International Studies Perspectives and Foreign Policy Analysis and has conducted extensive research on media systems and information flows in international politics. He created the press freedom data set that precedes this study, to examine the effect of media freedom on international conflict, as exemplified by "Press Freedom and the Democratic Peace" (Journal of Peace Research). That initial analysis was expanded to complete Press Freedom and Global Politics (Praeger), which provides the foundation for the extension conducted here. Studies of popular media and political theory led to the undergraduate textbook, A Novel Approach to Politics, which is now in its 4th edition. Also, before returning to the analysis of media freedom with this project, he conducted a series of studies examining the relationship between information flows, disasters, and foreign aid, including Media, Bureaucracies and Foreign Aid (Palgrave: With Potter and Rioux).

About the Author

Richard R. Kibbe served his apprenticeship in the shipbuilding industry and was graduated as a journeyman marine machinist. He holds an Associate in Arts degree in applied arts from Yuba Community College with an emphasis in machine tool technology. He also holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the California State University with an emphasis in machine tool manufacturing technology.

 

Mr. Kibbe has considerable job machine shop experience as well as community college and industrial teaching experience and is the author and co-author of several publications in the chain tool manufacturing field.

 

Roland O. Meyer spent the first 20 years of his career in the metal-working industry as a tool and die maker, machinist and worked in machine design and manufacturing. He completed his apprenticeship as a tool and die maker at Siemens in Germany and continued there as a journeyman building progressive punching dies.

 

He then worked in die shops in Toronto and Windsor, Canada before moving to Chicago employed as a gage maker at Ford Motor Company. Following this stint, he was in charge of the US army machine shops in Korea and Italy for five years. When he returned to the US, he worked in a manufacturing company designing and building experimental machines used in the timber and plywood industry. He next entered academia and became the lead instructor at Lane Community College’s Manufacturing Technology program in Eugene, Oregon, where he taught for 25 years. As CNC became the new method in machining, he developed a CNC curriculum and program. When CAM (Computer Aided Machining) became available he also developed a state of the art CAM program with the assistance of a local software company.

 

 

John E. Neely grew up in the Pacific Northwest and entered the Army to serve in World War II. The life John E. Neely is characterized by hard work, a variety of successes, and mentoring many others who became a part of his life.

 

Over the years Mr. Neely provided himself with a broad education and professional training through reading, a correspondence course in mechanical engineering, and good use of opportunities throughout his career. He became a master machinist, a mechanical engineer, a hydraulic engineer, and eventually an instructor at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon.

 

During his time as instructor he collaborated with others to develop highly successful course materials based on the individualized instruction approach. He and his collaborators wrote and had published several textbooks based on those materials. Those books continue to be in use nationally and internationally. After the death of his wife, he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in April 2000 to be with his son and his family. There, for the three years until his death, he enjoyed the company of family and friends.

 

 

Warren White apprenticed as an Optical Instrument Maker with Land-Air, Inc. After military service with the Army Air Defense Board he obtained a graduate degree in Psychology at Clark University. His interest in both learning theory and machine tools led to employment at Foothill College in the Engineering Department.

Warren White initiated the Machine Tool Technology program at De Anza College after an extensive survey of Silicon Valley manufacturing firms.  He was the Director of a California State-funded program to develop an Individualized Machinist Curriculum in conjunction with several California Community Colleges and Lane Community College in Oregon. He also initiated the California Community Colleges’ Multimediamobile which operated between several California Community Colleges to develop individualized instructional media in several technical disciplines.

 

He was the lead author and editor for Machine Tools and Machining Practices Volumes I and II published by John Wiley and Sons. He later taught Industrial Engineering classes at San Jose State University. He is certified by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers as a Manufacturing Engineer. After retiring from teaching he did voluntary Assistive Technology work with the Easter Seal Society in Santa Cruz, California, in a special program sponsored by IBM. He returned to work as a Quality Engineer for Seagate Technology, and obtained certification as a Quality Auditor. He started Seagate Technology on the path to achieving ISO 9001 certification.

They are ginormous. I have a tiny head/face, and they were way too big for me. I gave them to my husband and bought a smaller pair for myself. It was near the end of the season, and he hasn't used them yet. I know they are comfortable, and the field of vision is fantastic, but I can't comment on how they are during use. The other pair I bought isn't great in the fogging department. Hopefully these will be better for him than mine are for me.

These are really nice goggles for the price point. Love the sticky strap. I am using these for riding my scooter and I feel like a boss wearing them lol. Also I lol about the Okelay-Oakley ripoff-spinoff, makes me chortle. Eff expensive name brands these goggs rule.

I absolutely loves this ski goggles! Clear optics, comfortable and stylish. I think it will save my eyes very well when skiing!

I ordered this goggles mostly because I liked the price and design, eventhough I've never ordered everything online without trying it on first, I decided to go for it this time. It looked very stylish and also fit the requirements for weather.It arrived on time, in a bubbled from inside package. There were goggles and a bag for them inside, goggles wer wrapped in plastic from inside of the lens, which protected it from the dust and other scratches. They look new, as they should, with everything glued very well. The stripe on your head is a little bit big(long) to wear over a hat, but should be good on a helmet. They are flexible, although I didn't really try hard to band it into different sides. Dont look gigantic on my face! Sometimes new goggles put too much pressure on your nose, this ones do not! I wore them for like an hour, to see that!The visiability is quite good, I see the soft area on my nose, which I do not see on my other goggles, also I see the end of the lens from both sides(right, left and up and down), and on my others, I dont.I should say they definitely worth the price and I will order several lens for them! And surely recommend it to others!

I didn't want to overspend for goggles as I'm just a beginner and want to see how I like it first this season. These goggles looked like a good value and came in blue color that was recommended for various conditions. Fits comfortably and seems well made. Comes with a fog resistant inner coating which I tested by breathing on it in the cold and it worked! This was definitely a great deal!

I am so glad that I got these ski goggles. They are very sturdy, durable and strong. I love the fact that they are adjustable. The band is nice and thick. They are stylish and get the job done. I feel safe while wearing them.
